Star Anise
Illicium verum · Chinese star anise · Badian · Chakra PhoolBibhakar Spices supplies whole star anise (Illicium verum) from Idukki, Kerala, India. The eight-pointed star-shaped pods have a sweet, liquorice-like aroma used in biryani, garam masala, Asian broths and baking. They are packed in Ghaziabad in PET jars from 10 g to 500 g, bulk packs of 5–40 kg or under your own label.
Culinary star anise, correctly identified
Culinary star anise is the dried fruit of Illicium verum. Each star has six to ten pointed segments, each holding one shiny seed; the aroma comes from anethole, the same compound that flavours anise and fennel.
It must never be confused with Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum), which is not edible. Our star anise is Illicium verum, from Idukki, Kerala.
