Pepper from Kerala’s high ranges
Kerala’s Western Ghats are the historic home of black pepper; for centuries it was traded from the Malabar Coast. Idukki’s hill plantations grow pepper vines on shade trees alongside cardamom and coffee.
Pepper is graded by bulk density — the weight of one litre of berries. A 550 g/l lot has heavier, more mature berries than a 500 g/l lot, which is why food manufacturers commonly specify 550 g/l.
