Nutmeg from Kerala’s homestead farms

Kerala grows most of India’s nutmeg, often on mixed spice farms alongside pepper, cardamom and coffee. Each nutmeg fruit gives two spices: the seed (nutmeg) and the red aril around it (mace).

Nutmeg is traded by soundness: ABCD for whole, defect-free nuts; SS (sound shrivelled) for grinding; and BWP (broken, wormy, punctured) for oil extraction only.
